How much water does watermelon need? I have a good sized garden ready, (20'x35') and it has 12 hills. I was wondering if I could water by hand or needed to run a hose...
Thanks in advance, Matt D.

I grew watermelons one time many years ago. It was very a dry summer and I had actually almost forgotten about my water melons since they were at the far end of my garden and I never watered them. When I went to look at them to see if there were any I had a lot of huge watermelons just like you see in the store. So from that experience, I'd say they don't need all that much water. Someone else that grows them regularly might have a different take on it though.

Ok... that is good news! I get worn out doing corn and stuff, so it might be nice to only have to take a couple trips.

Update:
As of today we have three small and three large sugar baby watermelon on the vines and have many more flowers. One thing though. I have noticed it has been in the low 50's at night. Will watermelon continue to ripen when the temperature is so low at night? I have been worried about the temps because I have been told that watermelon will only ripen if the daytime temps are in the 75 and up range and nighttime temps don't drop below 65'. Is that true?

These are the sugar baby variety (Little), and the bottom on one has turned kinda cream colored so it might be ready in a few days.
