If using a foot-hold trap for coon or fox you need a #1 1/2 - #2 size trap. The 1 1/2 works best for coon because of the shape of their leg and foot. There are also some dog proof (DP) traps out there for coon that I am impressed with and hope to try some them this fall. They are made so the coon reaches into the trap for the bait and then can't his his foot back out. A dog can't get caught in these traps. Yeah I definitely would need a DP trap because I would feel awful if I caught my neighbors dog. What animal are you most interested in trapping Rohn?

Well it wouldn't matter unless it was a mean dog because it generally wouldn't hurt it. I have stuck my hand in mine and it doesn't hurt. You should be able to let a nice dog go. We have a neghbor who has this coonhound, and that dog isn't very bright. He prefers skunks over other things although he would probably steal a coon if it was in a trap.

Does anybody have any experience trapping Beavers? Where do you put the trap?

Well from what I heard you just find a slick or mound or something where the beaver comes through a lot and place the trap there. You can get some beaver lure and and make a mound and it will attract them, supposedly.

Yea have you ever read "Where the Red Fern Grows"? Drill a hole in the log, put a piece of tin can in the bottom, drive a nail at an angle, and bait with scent. Never tried it, but it seems like it would work. I have read this book. As for the trap mentioned goes there is the problem of getting a small animal caught and not being able to let it go. Far better to set leg holds or DP traps that you can release small animals unharmed. I have never done any beaver trapping but would like to give it a try sometime. As far as what animal I want most, well I'm not sure. I like trapping fox, coon and muskrats. I can't say I prefer one over the other except that the fox are worth the most and that makes a difference. One of these days when I get a chance I'll post a trap that I have.

Yea, you have to do what is worth your time for sure. Foxes are probably pretty smart aren't they?
