Any members do any trapping? I have trapped many years ago and am thinking about getting my traps out again in the fall. If I do I'd like to go for fox, raccoon, and perhaps some muskrats along with any other fur bearers that I happen upon.

Good topic. I haven't done any trapping so far. But I would be interested in coyote trapping if I did get into it. Beaver would be a good one to try also. It is so hard to hunt nocturnal animals like coyotes (I have tried) so trapping would be a helpful tool in getting some of these creatures. Have you ever done any fox before?

I have always wanted to try. It would be nice to get some cash and have a lot of fun for some furs. I particularly think trapping mink or coons near the waterline would be fun. If I did try it someday, I would also do coyotes 'cause there are way too many around my house.

I would probably catch a mountain lion ( ) or bear or something! That wouldn't be fun!

Justin Yes, I have trapped all the animals I mentioned. It is a lot of fun and fur prices are up now so it would pay if success was realized in this venture.

Ok. When you sell the hide would you sell it green or do you tan them your self?

Green. Stretched and dried.

Ok. I wasn't sure if you were into tanning them or not. How much would you expect to get for a fox?

According to Fur-Fish-Game Magazine they were going for 50-70 $$ or was it higher?

Green? Wow that is good. I would like to try that at some point. Matt was telling me that he has a little trap. I don't know if it was for something fox sized, but it might work for muskrats.

Yea I have an old one. You can get them all day long from antique stores for 5 bucks apiece. It is probably a bit small for fox but is perfect for coons and stuff.

Hey Matt what does your trap look like?

If using a foot-hold trap for coon or fox you need a #1 1/2 - #2 size trap. The 1 1/2 works best for coon because of the shape of their leg and foot. There are also some dog proof (DP) traps out there for coon that I am impressed with and hope to try some them this fall. They are made so the coon reaches into the trap for the bait and then can't his his foot back out. A dog can't get caught in these traps.

Yea have you ever read "Where the Red Fern Grows"? Drill a hole in the log, put a piece of tin can in the bottom, drive a nail at an angle, and bait with scent. Never tried it, but it seems like it would work.
