I don't know about you guys, but to me, a raccoon is a "coon". No one in my family has ever called them raccoons.
In my dad's side of the family, everyone was a coon hunter. They would think you're insane if you said you hunted raccoons.
Same with possums.
Have you ever heard someone say "opossum"?
Onetime I told a friend of that we almost hit a possum and he looked at me like I was crazy... Then he said how he had almost hit an "opossum".
It is shocking to me, because I have never heard that before in my life. Maybe it's just my area, But I thought the "O" was silent.
Who else said coon and possum?

We use "coon" and "raccoon" interchangeably. one is the same as the other. As far as "opossum" is concerned the "o" is always silent. We always say "possum."
How about "wood chuck" "groundhog" "whistle pig"? They all mean the same thing to me. A medium sized furry animal that digs holes in fields and eats the farmers clover.
