I suppose every state has some hunting and gun laws that seem a bit ridiculous. Here in OH I think it is a crazy law that you can only hunt with one gun at a time. That means that I cannot carry my .22 revolver on my belt while hunting rabbits with a shotgun. I have often hunted small game with both revolver and shotgun (in another state). If I saw a rabbit sitting out came the revolver, while rabbits on the run got the shotgun.
Another law that I don't like is if hunting with a handgun you must keep it on the outside of your clothing where it is showing. That means, if you have it on your belt and put your hunting coat on it becomes illegal because your coat covers it up. In another state I used to hunt deer with a revolver in a shoulder holster under my coat where it was out of the weather, but easy to get at.
Now in OH if you have a concealed carry permit you can carry a handgun under your coat for personal protection while hunting, but you dare not use that handgun for taking game.
Just a couple of personal gripes I have. I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts on these or any other crazy gun laws.

I have always thought those were the most idiotic laws myself too. The thing is, honestly, what difference does it make? It is just sad such a good state has some bad hunting laws.Like I would like too be able to hunt with centerfires, but sadly we have to conform to state law.And also, the laws that concern how many shells your shotgun can hold are just dumb.I can see their point, but will people acually listen if they would rapid fire on a deer?...No.

I love Ohio but I hate whoever made our hunting laws. Tell me if you think this is weird. I can hunt a deer with a 45 acp 1911 Which may not kill the deer right away, but they will not let me use, say a 308 win. They are concerned with the fact that most centerfire rifles will travel much farther than a shotgun. But right across the river in West Virginia you can use them, and apparently it's just fine there. Also in all the states out west you can use them, and even in California!
Now if all us here in Ohio have stricter laws than California something needs to change. We can't allow our selves to be more restrictive than possibly the most restrictive state in the nation. If they don't trust me with a rifle I don't see why they trust me with a muzzleloader.

Also I can hunt deer with a handgun that shoots straight cased ammo such as a .454 Casull but not with a bottle necked cartridge such as 30-30. Which has more power and longest range? I can't put a 30-30 barrel on my TC Encore for deer hunting but I can for wood chuck hunting or predator hunting. ? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Yeah I can hunt coyotes with a 22 short legally but I cannot use a 30-06 for deer. It doesn't make any sense at all. I if I could change the law right now I would allow all common hunting calibers to be used. They have been tried and tested in many different states and it doesn't hurt anybody. All this comes from a mistrust of firearm owners, they think we just are blasting the woods up like rambo or something.

I heard about a proposed gun law the other day that would criminalize private transfers. Another scary thing they wanted to do was make you get background checks on someone before giving your gun to them, for any amount of time. So that would make people who let their kids hunt do a background check on them prior. And also you would have to get one for letting your friend shoot your gun.
