What is your top pick of Gun/Bow for deer?
Currently, I use a 1949 Ithaca 37. But my top pick would be an Ithaca Deerslayer with a rifled barrel.
What would you guys use?

I am a handgun lover so I think I would choose a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag. I do not have one because of lack of $$ to get it. I now use a Traditions .50 cal muzzle-loader. I do have a .357 Security Six that I may use next year. I'll have to work up some loads for it through the summer and see if I think it will be good enough.

At the distances you shoot in Ohio the .44 would definitely do the trick. The .357 would be good too. I know a guy who hunts with a scoped .357 revolver, and he says it work fine on deer. Another up side to hunting with a handgun is not having to carry around a big old muzzleloader or shotgun around with you. It is especially nice when you're dragging the deer out of the woods. You can have both hands free. Justin

Hunting with a handgun in Ohio has a down side too. You have to wear it exposed, that means on the outside of your coat. If you have it on your belt and your coat covers it you are illegal. Doesn't make any sense at all, but if I understand it, that is the way it is. I will have to make a belt big enough to go around my hunting coat to carry it in my holster, or else I could carry it in my hand all the time.

I would very much like to get a pistol type HK style rifle and use that to deer hunt with. That would be a lot of fun. Something along the lines of this... ptr91.com/products/PTR%20PDW?id=22There is plenty of people who would very much like to hunt with these if legal. That would be the best way to bypass Ohio's stupid centerfire rifle laws.

Matt, That would be cool. Back on my soap box again - I always hunted deer with my long gun (rifle) and my .357 strapped to my side. I hunted small game with my shotgun and a .22 revolver strapped on my side. But here in Ohio it is against the law to hunt with more than one gun. Whoever made those laws doesn't have the brains God gave a goose, and that is only about a half a teaspoon full.

I would very much like to use one of those since it is legally a pistol, and although there are ones you can use (Some short barrel henry rifles and the sort ... www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-mares-leg.cfm ) there are very few. I have always thought why don't they ask all the hunters in different areas of Ohio if it would be safe to use a rifle in there area. If 75% of the hunters in a given area say it is safe, then let them use rifles in that county. I know around where I live it would be safe, there is just too many hills for the bullet to go far. They make similar laws for where you can hunt quail, trap otters, and take two, four, or six deer, so why not do the same with hunting deer with rifles? Matt D.
