If you check the proposed list of things Barrack Obama wants to do to "Prevent Gun Violence" then one of the scariest things is the ban of All armor piercing ammo. Not bad you may say, until you know what armor piercing ammo is.
Armor piercing ammo (AP) is any ammo with a steel or otherwise hard penetrator contained inside (This includes surplus ammunition that most Americans use for AK 74 and M91/30 rifles). Armor piercing incendiary (API) is any ammo with a penetrator and a incendiary compound contained therein. Most API's contain thermite.
But when you see there defintion in pistols, it gets you to worrying.
Know that that is clarified, the government's definition of an AP round is any pistol round that will go through one of the thin soft police vests. However effective police vests are at stopping pistol rounds, they will NOT stop any common centerfire rifle round, or even a shotgun slug. There is no evidence that they will try to expand the ban on armor piercing rounds, but as you probably know they will do anything they can to keep us from getting ammo.
My main worry is they will try to ban all ammo that will go through a police vest. If they expand the definition to all rounds that will go through a soft vest, then that would ban basically every rifle round in the world. And it would also ban all shotgun slugs, because they will go through police vests at under a certain distance. Now they may tell you that rifle rounds won't go through body armor, but they assume we don't know about it. Body armor is separated into two categories. Soft armor, and Hard Armor (Rifle plates). For instance, the military uses rifle plates because they will stop most FMJ rifle rounds. But hard armor is very heavy, and also bulky. So most police use soft (Kevlar and or other threads, effective at most pistol rounds that do not contain a penetrator) armor. It is thin and lightweight, perfect for police use.
But any .223, .308, or other commonly used military caliber will zip right through soft armor, not just rounds with a penetrator or incendiary compound. So when you hear them say they want to ban armor piercing ammo, then you know they mean all commonly used rifle ammo, and or shotgun slugs.
