Maybe it is the hot weather, but I've been thinking about the cool fall air and trapping season. I bought my hunting and fur-takers licenses today and then I went out to the shed and gathered up some of my trapping equipment. I am going to have to clean the traps and dye them before season. I also am planning on purchasing some dog proof coon traps and hope to catch a few coons this year. I have never used the DP traps before, so I have high hopes that they will do the job. I either need to buy some wire stretchers or make my own from wood. I have used the wire ones in the past and they served the purpose, but I may try to make my own from wood this year.
After removing my traps from my pack basket I found a nice collection of hulls from acorns and seeds, left by chipmunks or mice. By the rice shaped droppings in the basket I'd say it was mice. The leather strap on the basket is broken so I'll be replacing that with a new piece of leather.
I have a few #1 1/2 Double coil springs, a couple #2 coil springs, and some #1 1/2 single long-springs, one #1 long-spring and about 15 #110 body grips.
It a been quite a few years since I trapped so I am anxious to get back at it again. I have several people that have given me permission so I guess the rest is up to me. I am anxious for November when the season comes in but there is still quite a bit to do before hand.
Our turtle trapping is sort of on hold. We did catch another small turtle that was not a snapper and we let it go. We still have one trap out but no turtle hooks. Once it cools down a bit we will probably get inspired again for turtles. Its just too HOT for serious outdoor activity.
